A complete guide to Mother's Day 2024: Love & Gratitude

April 9, 2024 | Mother's Day

The History of Mother’s Day in Australia

In Australia, Mother's Day has a history that goes back to at least 1910 and is based on a tradition that was started in the United States by a woman named Anna Jarvis. In the early 1900s, Anna wanted to create a special day to honour all mothers because she admired how much they did for their families and so, in 1908, the first official Mother's Day celebration was held in West Virginia. Anna contacted newspapers and other important people and campaigned to make Mother's Day into an official holiday. And, by 1912, many states, towns, and other countries including Australia started celebrating Mother's Day every year. Finally, in 1914, the President of the United States declared that the second Sunday in May would officially be known as Mother's Day.

In Australia, we follow the same tradition as they do in the United States and this year Mother's Day will be celebrated on Sunday May 12th 2024. Over time, the tradition has evolved, and has became much more like the modern Mother's Day we know today, where we show love and appreciation to our mothers with flowers, cards, gifts, and love. It's a lovely day to honour and show gratitude to the wonderful mothers and mother figures in our lives.

How to celebrate Mother's Day

Mother's Day is celebrated with love and appreciation all over the world. It's a day to say thank you to all the special women in our lives who have ‘mothered’ us in so many ways. The most important thing about Mother's Day is showing your love in a way that suits your own special Mum. You could write a note to your mum to tell her how much you love and appreciate her  or share your favourite memories and let her know how special she is, you could even bake a cake that she would love. Breakfast in bed has always been a great way to show Mum (or anyone) how special they are.

In many families it is a real treat for Mum to go out for a special meal. It could a be a lovely breakfast in your local cafe or beachside park, a picnic lunch or fancy dinner at her favourite restaurant!

Flowers and Gifts

Of course, our favourite way to celebrate Mother's day is to send beautiful flowers! If you know Mum's favourite flower and it is in season you can always send Mum a very personal bouquet. Or we would suggest choosing from our beautiful range that includes something for every MUM!!

You can also add a pretty and thoughtful gift like a fragrant candle, delicious chocolates, champagne, wine or even a cute teddy bear. We also offer a pretty hand cream to make her feel cherished and pampered. Flowers come in so many pretty colours and designs that you are sure to find something that your mother would love.

Which flowers to send on Mother’s Day?

In Australia, Mother's Day falls in Autumn. It is a beautiful season full of abundant and lovely flowers. These are some of our favourite flowers for Mother's day.

Chrysanthemums or 'Mums' as they are often called are a lovely choice as they represent love and gratitude. Beautiful large-headed disbud chrysanthemums in pink, white or mauve are the most popular choice but for the bright Mum we have gorgeous yellows and limes as well. There are lots of varieties of Chrysanthemum and they are all beautiful. Disbuds which are large single chrysanthemums feature in many of our Mother's Day Vases especially our Mother's Day Blush Vase  our Mother's Day Classic Vase.

Roses symbolise love, faithfulness and joy and come in a pretty range of colours from soft pink to deep ruby red. They look beautiful on their own in a large bouquet or vase or we often use them mixed in with other flowers as a stunning feature. Roses give every flower arrangement a premium and special feel. Our Mother's Day Bright Vase is a wonderful and vibrant gift for Mum to show your love, appreciation and joy! It features beautiful large-headed roses in bright shades and tones.
